RE:BORN PROJECT KUSHITANI HAMAMATSU HEADQUARTERS SHOP

Founded in 1947, Kushitani Shoten

When did "motorcycle gear" come to be known by that name in Japan? Shortly after the war, we were crafting leather school bags and women's leather coats. A small shop called Kushitani Shoten operated in Terashima Town, Hamamatsu. Inside the shop, leather accessories were packed into wooden display cases on the dirt floor. As motorcycle manufacturing flourished in the city of Hamamatsu, it eventually earned the nickname "Ponpon City." Kushitani began producing leather goods for motorcycles upon request from motorcycle manufacturers. Since then, we’ve been manufacturing a wide range of motorcycle products, not just leather items, from our base in Hamamatsu, reaching across Japan and the world. There’s no better place to feel the transformation from an era with no motorcycle gear to today’s thriving motorcycle culture than Hamamatsu, the birthplace of motorcycle culture. We invite you to immerse yourself in this history at our Hamamatsu flagship store, which embodies both the past and present of Kushitani.

This September, the KUSHITANI flagship store in Hamamatsu will relocate and reopen. Spanning approximately 600 square meters, the new store features not only a retail space but also a museum, a relaxation area, and even a restored version of the original Kushitani Shoten from 1947, creating an experience akin to a theme park. Despite being the largest store in KUSHITANI’s history, every aspect of the store's concept and design, from the overall vision to the finest architectural details, was meticulously crafted in-house without outsourcing.

It stands as an exceptional creation not just as a KUSHITANI shop, but also as a remarkable apparel store, all while remaining true to the "keep concept" philosophy. In an age where the internet is pervasive and information is abundant, the convenience of modern life has led many businesses to shift away from traditional face-to-face sales. Nevertheless, KUSHITANI continues to open new stores across the country, culminating in this significant renovation of the Hamamatsu flagship. "Kushitani Shoten, run by the founders, was the kind of store where, if a customer brought in an item for repairs, we would fix other parts as well. The customers came to us because they needed help. We wanted them to be happy. It wasn’t just about repairs in the sense of fixing things, but also about fulfilling their requests—whether they wanted something specific or needed adjustments. That spirit of service and craftsmanship is something we wanted to continue, so we made after-sales service and product creation our own. We’ve never forgotten that origin. There are customers who come from afar, and with store holidays, our online store also serves as an important point of contact. Still, the foundation is face-to-face interaction. Each customer has their own preferences, ways of enjoying motorcycles, and challenges. Only in person can we have in-depth conversations, address concerns, and offer repairs to their satisfaction. This return to our roots, visually represented, is what we wanted to create." "I want to see our customers happy. Selling products is not the only aspect of business.

Although our store has a new and unique structure, what we aimed for was to manifest the spirit that has been passed down through the years. "Some of the children who used to carry Kushitani school bags to school are now in their elderly years, but they still visit the store from time to time, smiling nostalgically. For those people and the riders from back then, having a tangible piece of the past, like the original Kushitani Shoten, makes it easier to reminisce. As the generations change and we see more young staff joining, I believe it's important for both us and our customers to know the origin. We want to create a space that goes beyond just being a retail store, a place where such exchanges can take place."

The new store concept is a result of our strong conviction. With over 77 years of staying true to the "keep concept," KUSHITANI's journey and commitment to innovation will continue.
